Harsh Lipliner
On par with brooches and tweed, there are several trends that have come and gone for the better. You know, like stretchy jeans and bold floral patterns. However, the worst of them all is a dark lip liner that doesn't blend well (or doesn't blend at all) with your lipstick.

And even if you do see this type of atrocity walking down the street, you're definitely within your right to not embrace it.
It actually just restricts mobility, so there’s no reason to wear a skirt when you're wearing pants. This prime example of Ashley Tisdale showing us what not to wear was taken in 2005 at the movie premiere of "Ice Princess." Now sobered with time, Tisdale even roasted this questionable fashion choice in a TikTok video.
Wearing Too Much Black
The downside of today's beauty standards is the obvious way many people choose to dress. Black may be a slimming color, but wearing an all-black outfit can make you look dull and wash out your complexion. We're not saying black is all bad; but as you age, black won't do you any favors.
If you like to wear black, then try pairing your outfit with colorful accessories or scarves. If you wear a black skirt, couple it with a brightly colored blouse and some colorful jewelry. Or vice-versa, if you wear a black top, pair it with blue jeans or bold-patterned pants and beige shoes.
Not Embracing Your Natural Hair Color
The fashion industry and aging are famously not aligned. While many people believe you should steer clear of going gray and dye your natural hair, going gray can be liberating. Nowadays, gray is a fashion statement, and yes, gray hair can look attractive!
As a general rule of thumb, lighter hair can make you look younger, so why not embrace it? Also, dyeing over grey hair will sooner or later result in a faint tint of whatever color you chose over a grey halo. Once you give the grey the respect it deserves, you've got class and empowerment in your pocket.
Cakey Foundation
Some people decide to wear a lot of foundation in an effort to cover up or even distract from their fine lines and wrinkles. However, if the product is not of good quality it will usually have the opposite effect and what those people are really doing is making their skin appear more textured and grainy.
As a rule of thumb, if you need to pack on the product in order to see any result, don't buy it. Bad-quality foundation can irritate the skin, clog your pores, and contribute to the skin's aging process — all things we are all trying to avoid.
Big, Poofy Hair
You see the big 80s haircut before you see the woman. She’s styled it so big you can't see anything behind her. Her hairstyle would have been considered fabulous back in the 70s and 80s, but now she looks like she's just stepped out of a time machine.
Teasing, hairspray, and over-styling, really damage your hair, leaving it dull and lifeless. What you really want to be doing is keeping your hair healthy and hydrated. Sure, Dolly Parton has built a sizeable portion of her style on that choice, but A – she uses wigs and extensions, and B – we can't all be Dolly.
Baggy Clothes
With this fashion tip, we're not advocating skintight clothing so you can appear more "youthful." Instead, we are suggesting that you wear pieces that are tailored to your natural body shape. Sometimes wearing baggy clothing is fun. A loose summer tunic feels romantic, and a baggy dress or a flowing pair of pants can make you feel artistic.
The real issue comes when you regularly wear pieces that are a few sizes too big. There is quite a disparity between wearing something that is designed to be loose, and wearing something that is quite obviously a few sizes too big!
Bad Posture
Much like wearing ill-fitting clothing, having a bad posture can instantly make you look older. Obviously, as we grow older, our muscles become a little weaker and don't support us as well as they used to. When your back is straight, and your shoulders are back, you appear healthy, energetic, and elegant.

Sure, makeup artists on Instagram might have a different take on that view, but that's their job. Also, most of them are in their early twenties so they couldn't care less about appearing young. Those who are interested in achieving a younger look should stick to one of the two: eyeliner or eyeshadow. Never both. And a bare and bright-eyed look might be even better.

Wait, what? What's the problem with wearing flowers? Well, we aren't saying you need to dispose of anything floral in your closet. Just take a look at your florals and think: do they look like a fun spring getup or do they remind you more of your grandmother's curtains?
Wearing floral everything can make you blend in with the furniture, not to mention it also ages you. If you enjoy your floral clothes, then rather wear tailored pieces that you can pair well with casual items, like denim or a plain white t-shirt. As it turns out, happy faces were rated as younger than they really were, while unhappy faces were rated older! Now that alone is reason enough to make you smile!
Let’s Brooch It
First of all, there's a fine line between classic and antiquated. A brooch is antiquated and not as classic as might think. Yes, they were considered stylish back in the day, but now it's better to keep your brooches for sentimental value and not wear them.

So, what we're trying to say is to be mindful of your brooch's design and placement. This world is full of supposed beauty faux pas peppered with no-good reputations and your eyebrows are no exception. They help frame your face and draw attention to your eyes, so keep them well-groomed but don't over-pluck them into thin lines that make them look like they were drawn on your face with a sharpie.
Sure, we've all been guilty of over-plucking our eyebrows at some point in our lives. Sunglasses
Don't get us wrong. We are not saying you shouldn't wear sunglasses. These accessories can be as functional as they are fashionable. Unless you’re a shape-shifter, you only have one face — and that's actually helpful when it comes to finding the perfect sunglasses for your face shape.
Whichever style you go for, don't wear something that will weigh you down too much, like thick, black frames with sharp edges. Online guides are incredibly handy in helping you figure out which frame shape goes with your bone structure.
Wearing Sheer Pantyhose
Nowadays, the only acceptable pantyhose colors are black or nude ones that blend well with your skin tone. This entry, interestingly, is not about your conventional use of a belt (in the loops on your pants) but rather a more creative placement of it. Wearing tailored clothes that fit you well will make you look slimmer and younger. This means that looser or ill-fitting clothes might look frumpy on you, so why not wear a belt over that boxy dress?
Not all clothes need to be tightly fitted, but if you feel like you look more shabby than you'd like, throw over a belt, and voila! It doesn't matter how old you are, you can always use that tip to accentuate a curve or two, or even create the illusion of it.
Turtlenecks
Turtlenecks are a dangerous proposition. On one hand, many women of a certain age will opt for one to hide any dwindling of the skin around the neck area. This isn't to say that you need to get rid of all of your turtlenecks, but just be mindful of the specific cut and fit. Also, when you want a classic look that's more timeless than behind the times, wear a turtleneck with a pair of jeans or a trendy blazer.
Flashy Jewelry
While it may be many people's instinct to wear as much bling as they can, overdoing it can be self-defeating and weigh you down. Decades ago, women used to wear almost every piece of jewelry they had whenever they left the house for different reasons.

Having a head full of bleach blonde streaks is enough nowadays to turn heads in disdain and have people taking. Fortunately, hairstyles have come a long way; now you can try more subtle versions like balayage, which is a technique for highlighting hair but in a more gradual, natural-looking effect.
Longer Skirts
We should all aspire to wear age-appropriate clothing, but a skirt that goes all the way to your ankles can potentially end up doing more harm than good by making yourself look frumpy. However, notice we said "potentially". Just like nearly everything on this list (and in life), it's all a question of individual styling and knowing what works for your body shape.
If you like wearing loose-fitting skirts, it's best to pair them with a tailored blazer or a fitted top. But make sure your proportions are in check, as wearing a long skirt means you'll need to balance it with something shorter on top.
Capri Pants
Never in the history of fashion, did capri pants flattered anyone. Man or woman, old or young, tall or short. This cut that ends a little too far under the knee yet not far enough to reach the ankle is an abomination that somehow still exists despite what we would like to think of people's better judgment.
Those dreaded capris somehow make you look shorter and older at the same time. Capris make your legs look shorter because their cut stops around your calves, making your legs look wider, and that's just not flattering. Ditch these unflattering trousers for something more modern, like wide-legged pants.
Too Much Pastel
Depending on your natural complexion, wearing too much pastel clothing can make you look a bit lackluster and dull. Those with light, fair complexion can appear washed out when wearing these, while darker skin can contrast it beautifully. But not to worry, if your skin is light and you like wearing pastels, you still can. Just pair them with other shades and hues.

The easier way to wear that precious sweater your aunt knitted for you is to try to create a more defined overall silhouette. Pair your larger pieces of knitwear with other items that are more form-fitting, like a good pair of jeans, or something more stylish, like a pencil skirt and boots.
Tweed
Tweed is a rough-surfaced woolen cloth, typically of mixed-flecked colors, that was originally produced in Scotland. Despite being a lovely fabric, wearing too much of it can make you look uptight and even a little smug. Just because it worked for Sherlock Holmes, doesn't mean it can work for just anyone.
Wearing a two-piece tweed suit might be too much, so to offset any unwanted impressions, we'd recommend twinning a tweed blazer with slim black trousers and pointy heels. Or, if you're in possession of cool tweed pants, pair them with a shirt or blouse of lighter fabric that will contrast the heavy wool.
Monochrome
Don't get us wrong, we really like the look of a good monochrome outfit, but there is something about wearing monochrome that begins to age you when it looks too clean and plain. Even while wearing a monochrome outfit, there is no reason for you to look forgettable or not let your vibrant personality shine through. And that can be done quite easily!
If wearing a monochrome outfit makes you feel chic and sophisticated, go ahead and do that! Just remember to accessorize the whole look with a differently-colored piece such as a scarf or handbag. A fun print can also do the trick and counterbalance your outfit.
Hair that Doesn't Frame Your Face
Long and loose hair can look fantastic if it's healthy and taken care of, but as you age, the vertical direction of your hair can make your face droop down as well. For an instant and effortless facelift, tie your hair up in a high pony.
Tying your hair up in a French twist can look elegant. Otherwise, treat yourself to a hair clip for effortless styling. It's important to remember that putting your hair up for a prolonged period of time can result in an achy scalp. So, if you're looking for a way to counter that droopy look, consider getting a stylish bob that will properly frame your face.
Trying Too Hard
A good thing to remember is there's nothing as old as trying too hard to look young. That's just another annoying thing about the beauty industry: you're encouraged to hide your real age but once you go to a certain length to do it, you're at risk of being ridiculed. This is why you need to tiptoe around the issue as subtly as you can.
Think about Madonna and Andi MacDowell. Madonna clings to her youth by desperately trying to keep up with her much younger peers. Andi MacDowell is the same age as Madonna, but she embraces her age and looks, and she looks great doing it!

Trendy blazers can be a fashionable way to flaunt fashion, but a loose-fitting blazer will make you look older. Even though oversized power suits are in right now and trending like crazy, if your blazer is too baggy, it can add unwarranted years to your age.
Somehow, at the same time, it will also make you look like a child who got lost in their father's suit jacket. Neither of those effects is something people usually aim for. While it might not be as trendy, we'd suggest wearing a fitted blazer, and if you feel the need to lean into trends, accessorize with bespoke jewelry.
Midi-Anything
Remember how women protested the midi when it came back in the 1960s? They thought it was an unflattering cut, and they were 100% right! It makes women of all ages look frumpy and old. To redeem your look, pay special attention to where the midi hemline lands on your leg.
The skirt comes in varying lengths, and you want to choose one that hits your leg in a way that doesn't make you look stumpy. This usually means you want to try and avoid the hem falling at the widest part of your calves. Otherwise, your only hope for salvaging the look is wearing knee-high, high-heel boots, and that look really isn't for just anyone.
Outdated Shoes
Round-toed shoes work for babies and toddlers but after a certain age, they stop being flattering. They can look shabby, dowdy, and age you, according to Who What Wear. The time to wear peep-toe heels has long passed, and you want to avoid them at all costs if you wish to look like you belong in current times.
To avoid an outdated look, try opting for some Oxford dress shoes instead. The style is timeless and the variety will guarantee you can find something to your liking, be it flat or on heels. Shoes can do a lot for you, so if you're going to splurge on one item, it's always good to spend your hard-earned cash on a trusty pair of quality shoes.
Stretchy Jeans
Fashion trends, much like food trends, are inherently ridiculous and jeggings are their own special subgenre of ugly jeans. Is there anything worse than stretchy jeans, and does anyone actually look good in them? Matte Makeup
The point of matte makeup is to add color without any sheen. This might have been fashionable a couple of years ago, but now this trend is done and dusted, meaning that if you use it you are running the risk of appearing outdated. Newer makeup products will try to help you achieve a frech-faced dewy effect rather than matte.
That being said, this choice really depends on your skin type: oily skin usually has a natural sheen and doesn't need help looking dewy. This means that trying to add a dewy effect to it will just make it look unflatteringly wet.
Velour Tracksuits
We should all now be privy to the 21st century’s worst fashion trend, in which women pair velour tracksuits together and then strut around pretending they’re Jennifer Lopez. We get the appeal — they're comfortable, they feel nice on your skin, and they come in various colors and sizes.
However, they are best left in loungewear territory. Basically, if you ever decide to wear these matching pieces to LEAVE the house, just don't. Preparing for a home workout session? About to cook something fun? Feeling like lazing about with your new Netflix binge? As long as it's an indoor activity, knock yourself out.
Over the Top Nails
Look, we are the last people on the planet to tell you how you should or shouldn't use your nails to express yourself. We can, however, walk you through the risks of your choices. Yes, you can wear lavishly decorated nails that bling almost as much as your diamond rings. That's fully your prerogative.
However, what we do know is that they're not doing you any favors when it comes to looking younger. Having nails that stand out too much will only draw attention to your hands, which you might want to rein in more as you age. Sticking to short nails with nude or clear polish is usually the best course of action.
Weird Sleeves
The next rule is disregarded by more people than you would expect. From bishop or trumpet sleeves to the worst offender, off-the-shoulder tops, these fashion trends have gone beyond our better judgment. They can be seen on aging hippies and the Pope, which do not serve as fashion inspiration for most of us.
We guess that the choice of these sleeves usually stems from wanting to cover floppy arms, however, normally fitted sleeves will do the trick and do it even better. Even at the best of times, these tops are unflattering, so better avoid them at all costs and wear something tailored.
Cardigans
There are so many great cardigans out there, but button-up cardigans just have that 'wizened old grandmother' look about them. And we all know that wise old grandmothers would have a killer wardrobe and know how to keep up with trends so not even they will be caught wearing one.
They might be great when you're interviewing for a position at the library but otherwise, those woolly fibers and stitched-on buttons will just make you look matronly. If you are looking for something warm to layer over your t-shirt in the fall, try opting for a hoodie or a good old-fashioned sweater.
Bohemian
We love the boho aesthetic, something flowing and loose that's cool enough for those hot summer days. Despite that, dressing up as a hippie from the '60s can make you look like you came from the '60s. And we all know you don't have a time machine.
We've seen too many movies to know those things will just end up breaking the universe, and we're all still intact. If this is your preferred style, all the power to you, but try mixing in other pieces, like tailored pants with a flowy boho shirt or a casual t-shirt with a big boho wrap for a casual-chic look.

Stop worrying about getting that straight hair from the 70s and let your locks stay wavy. As we age, our hair starts to thin out. Even those of us with thick hair will likely experience thinning, and some specific styles will only shed more unwanted light on this issue.
If you’re still wearing your hair parted straight down the middle, you should know it isn't flattering to leave it flat. Instead, you should try focusing on increasing your hair’s volume. Avoid straightening it and try brushing it with your fingers rather than a regular brush to bring out any natural waves. This will complement your face better and make you look younger.
Blunt Bangs
When asking hair stylists, you will find that they will either strongly advocate for bangs or strongly object. We are here to tell you that it really depends on your type of hair and the shape of your face. There are several different styles of bangs, from blunt bangs to wispy bangs, from curved bangs to side-swept bangs.
Yes, some of these choices might age you, however, if you’re tempted to cut bangs, you should keep some factors in mind. Wearing the Wrong Undergarments

A more flattering alternative would be double-knit fabrics, which offer more structure and a comfy fit, with a little bit of stretch.

Adding hair extensions can potentially age you for several reasons. Firstly, improperly applied extensions can put a strain on your natural hair, leading to breakage and thinning. This can make your hair appear weaker and aged. Moreover, extensions require regular maintenance and can be time-consuming to style and maintain, adding stress and inconvenience to your daily routine.
Additionally, using low-quality extensions or ones that do not match your natural hair color and texture can create an unnatural and artificial look, which can inadvertently make you appear older. Lastly, the weight of extensions can pull on your scalp, potentially causing tension headaches and discomfort, further contributing to a tired and aged appearance.

Possibly the worst colors for anyone trying to avoid an aged effect are black and almost any shade of blue. The hue of the eye shadow you choose can affect your overall look more than you know, so it's better to choose a color that's more natural and earthy.
Wigs
After years of being part and parcel of many people's beauty regimens, wigs have finally reached mainstream popularity, thanks to celebrities and social media accounts showcasing them without shame. But, as great as they are, wearing a wig isn’t as simple as putting any wig on.
The most flattering wig would obviously be custom-made and tailored to your natural hairline and the shape of your face. It would also be incredibly expensive. If you don't mind shelling out the dollars, get fitted with a wig that would look similar to your hair’s natural thickness and not look or feel synthetic. The best fit should be chosen based on lifestyle.
The Wrong Hairstyle
Once upon a time, people didn't have YouTube tutorials on how to do anything under the sun. If you saw a cool hairstyle in a magazine and wanted to try it out for yourself, you had a lot of trial and error waiting for you.
Using pictures from magazines and online as a guide for your desired hairstyle can lead to 'hairesy!' Especially if your picture of someone else's hair isn’t suitable for your face and hair type. You’ll have a much better chance of getting a reasonable fit for you if you look for someone with a similar shape as you.
Following Fads
The biggest problem with trends is that they change rapidly, so if you’re following outdated trends, you tend to look out of touch and therefore, older. You have two options to deal with that predicament: you can either immerse yourself in fashion news and keep up or you can make sure your wardrobe is timeless.
Honestly, the latter option sounds a lot more manageable. While certain trends come and go, some pieces never go out of style. Keep those around and whenever you feel like changing things up a bit, do it with accessories, which are a lot easier to keep or toss away.
Frumpy Jeans
Mom jeans may be back in style, along with high-waisted jeans. But we've all noticed that these aren't those frumpy jeans we all remember from the '80s. Oh no, today is a different story. Now they're tighter around the waist and have a straighter fit along your leg.
So whatever silhouette of jeans you like to wear — just make sure they are tailored to your body shape and they don't bag and sag in awkward places. You will be amazed at how differently your body will look when it doesn't have jeans on that are a size or two too big!
Choppy Hairstyles
Blunt cuts are always in — and look great, no matter your age! But the way you cut and style your hair does matter. According to experts, blunt bobs tend to highlight harsh angles, making your bone structure look more severe.
This picture of American singer Kimberly Caldwell will have anyone wondering if they can pull off that hairstyle, but don't be tempted — this cut goes well with that specific face shape and not much else. Try to soften your hairstyle by styling waves to create some texture — this type of look can work for different faces and you can style it more easily.
Too Much Blush
Wearing excessive blush can actually make you appear older rather than enhancing your natural beauty. When applied too heavily or in the wrong shade, blush can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, emphasizing them and drawing attention to the signs of aging. It can also make your skin look unnatural and cakey, accentuating texture and imperfections.
Overly rosy cheeks can create a clownish effect, undermining a youthful and fresh appearance. Additionally, using a heavy hand with blush can throw off the balance of your overall makeup, making it look dated and unflattering. Opting for a subtle and natural blush application is key to maintaining a youthful and radiant complexion.
Bottom-Bulky Hair
There is nothing wrong with trying to create some volume in your hair. The trick is to make sure the volume is set in the right places. And by "right places" we mean most of it needs to be styled at the top, closer to your roots.
Bottom-heavy hair has a tendency to make your face look droopy and unbalanced as it clashes with the shape of your face, which is usually narrower around the chin. Adding a touch of all-over volume is a better way to lift your look and give your face a little youthful fullness. It will also just make you look more youthful and keep you up-to-date with your hair.
Over-the-Top Contouring
When a new beauty trick trends, you start to see it everywhere, and that's exactly what happened with contouring. The point of contouring is to define your face shape a little more. It usually helps out with bringing out your cheekbones and giving shape to your nose.
However, if you overdo it, it will look like you're wearing way too much makeup, which is missing the point. You don't want to look like your foundation is wearing you. You are the master here! There are many youtube videos that cater to mature skin, and they will all say that less is more.
Glittery Eye Makeup
Glittery shadows are straight from the '90s and should probably stay that way. Glimmering makeup only minimizes contours, and while it has its place (in editorial fashion articles and music festivals), it can also exaggerate wrinkles and fine lines. These are things you normally don't want to happen as they make you look older.
That doesn't mean you should throw all of your sparkly makeup away. One way you can still use it, if you want, is to dab a little sparkle at the inner corner of your eyes — this famous makeup trick will draw attention to your eyes and make them look bigger and illuminated.
Lining Your Waterline
Some unfortunate ladies are still out there lining their lash line with a Kohl black liner. This practice may look better on people from specific cultures and ethnicities, such as Indians, but not everyone can pull it off. In fact, depending on the shape of your eye, lining the waterline will not only make your eyes look smaller but will age you.
It will also make your eye look weighed down by the product. When applying and removing it on a regular basis, it can also speed up the process of wrinkling around your eyes. Nobody wants that to happen, right?
Designer Flip-Flops
Not only are those designer flip-flops an easy way for department stores to make some extra cash, but they’re also tawdry! Tacky logos and ugly jewels draw way too much attention to your feet and not the good kind.
Most people can easily tell if it's a cute shoe, but there’s only one demographic that really likes these shoes, and it’s not a young one. Besides, wearing flip-flops does not provide your foot with proper support, so opting for sandals is probably a better option anyway. Unless you are going to places other than the pool or the beach, there really is no reason for you to wear them.
Wearing Two-Piece Formal Dresses
If you love the coverage and comfort that this silhouette offers you, and (most importantly) you feel beautiful in it, then keep this in your closet. The same thing goes for pretty much any item on this list — sure, there are items and practices we would advise against, but overall, we are just people on the internet with an opinion.
You call the shots on what you wear and how you feel in it. That being said — if the two-piece formal dress in your closet is not something you actively love, odds are it is making you look older than you are and that it doesn't flatter you. Don't be afraid to try on "younger" dresses.
Feeling Uncomfortable
Your closet will feel "old" if half of its contents are things you aren't in love with. If you buy pieces that are simply "fine" or that feel "age-appropriate," then your mood will reflect your ambivalence towards what you're wearing. Only buy pieces you're excited about when you try them on in the changing room, and leave everything else alone.
That way, you will only dress in outfits that make you feel like your best self, and your attitude and confidence will reflect that. Every day will be a "good outfit day," and you will never feel like you're hiding away or living in the background.
Chunky Shoes
Chunky shoes include Crocs, which are not okay. Those shoes were originally made for doctors so they can wear something that is light, supportive, and breathable during their long shifts. If you aren't a doctor in the middle of a shift, there is no excuse for you to wear them.
If you want to dress to impress, don't even think about wearing chunky shoes, they'll only make you look clownish. While you might want a more stable shoe with ample ankle support, that doesn't mean you have to settle for unsightly orthopedic footwear. There are plenty of options out there that are both stylish and healthy.
Too Pale
Years ago, finding a shade of foundation that was the exact match for your skin was nearly impossible. This drove people into finding alternatives such as baby powder that was much lighter than their own skin tone and gave them a ghostly look. A ghostly look you definitely don't want on yourself.
We're all for embracing your pale skin but don't overdo it by slathering on foundation and powder that are two shades lighter than your skin. You want your face to look as natural as possible, so try to get a shade of foundation as close to your natural skin color, then add a bit of color with blush and lipstick.
Deep, Dark Lipstick
Wearing lipstick that's overwhelmingly dark can make you look a little thin-lipped when usually what you really want to do is make your lips look fuller. So ditch those dark colors and go for lighter shades instead. As you age and your lips start to thin, wearing dark lipstick will only intensify the thinning, which you definitely don't want.
Instead, wear lipgloss over your lipstick. That little extra shine will reflect light and make your lips appear thicker than they actually are. Nowadays, you can even find volumizing lipgloss that works twice as well. When all else fails, you can always try the Kylie Jenner lip kit.
Silky Scarves
Wearing a silky scarf around your neck may feel chic and elegant, but it will also draw unwanted attention to your neck area, which women of a certain age usually try to avoid. And let's not put aside the fact that you might be mistaken for a 60s airline stewardess.
If you have a nice silk scarf you want to flaunt, there are ways to do it that don't include wearing it around your neck. One way would be to wrap it around your shoulders like a shawl. Another way would be to tie it to the strap of your handbag. A third way would be to string it through your belt loops and wear it around your waist.
Excessive Concealer
Applying a good quality concealer that's suited for mature skin will definitely help get rid of those dark and dreary shadows under your eyes. However, if it's not of good quality or not the right color for you, it will also accentuate those fine lines you have around your eyes.
When concealing those wrinkles and fine lines, start with a tiny amount of concealer so it won't look plastered on, and apply it in thin layers to make sure it will blend well. Otherwise, you could be running the risk of making the lines look deeper and more apparent than they really are.
Finishing With Powder
We all know that youthful skin glows by reflecting light. This is why the dominant makeup look in recent years is dewy. Powders do the opposite by preventing light from reflecting and causing creases in your skin to become more obvious.
Maybe you've been applying powder as a finishing touch since your college years. Well, it's high time to stop now. That being said, for individuals with oily skin, using a powder might feel necessary to set the makeup. While you can do that, we would recommend using a setting spray instead, which will not weigh heavy on your skin.
Mascara on Your Lower Lashes
While wearing mascara on your upper lashes is a pretty standard procedure, you don't want to do that on your lower lashes too. Putting mascara on your lower lashes can make your eyes appear droopier than they are and even draw unwanted attention to those pesky dark circles.
The whole look makes your eye look heavy and sunken, which is a look nobody wants. Instead, you should focus on your upper lashes by curling them and layering on a volumizing mascara from their roots through the ends for an uplifting effect. This should result in an eye that looks bigger and more impressive.
Not Changing Your Style
As we know, fashion trends come and go. Sometimes certain shapes, cuts, or colors can make a comeback, but designers, magazines, and trendsetters always have some kind of innovation up their fashionable sleeves. When you stick to one style for many years and refuse to give new things a go, it contributes to an older, outdated look.
That being said, if the items and garments in your closet make you feel happy and attractive, none of the current trends really matter. If you are feeling comfortable in your own skin, people are going to pick up on that and nothing else would matter.
Not Using Highlighter
Highlighter has been around for a hot minute, so if you aren't already on board this train, it's time to hop on. The quickest way to fake younger-looking skin is by highlighting, a.k.a. strobing. If you're not highlighting, you're not making the most out of this fabulous makeup trick.
The application is pretty easy — using your favorite highlighter (in liquid, powder, or stick formation), just dab a tiny little bit of it on the higher, more illuminated parts of your face. Those include your cheekbones, your browbones, the tip of your nose, and your upper forehead. Easy peasy and with great results!
Not Moisturizing
This is probably the most important tip, and it's also one of the easiest. First, remember you need to hydrate from the inside first and then the outside. This means that the best thing you can do for your skin is to drink plenty of water. After that, you can prioritize applying moisturizers daily.
When it comes to your cosmetics, keep an eye open for hydrating products. Skin that's taken care of will feel soft and also look it! When you make sure your skin is hydrated, you help it wrinkle less and appear a lot more youthful. Now, pour yourself a glass.
Not Using Collagen
There's a good reason they call collagen creams the “fountain of youth.” As we age, our collagen stores deplete. Since collagen is what gives our skin elasticity, losing it means that our skin can get wrinklier. So to make the most of it and maintain your skin's elasticity, we'd recommend collagen products, whether they come in powder form for your drinks or in creams for your skin.
Research-based collagen benefits are said to include skin, hair, and nail health, joint health, and gut health. All these are functions that start deteriorating when we grow older so it's good to keep your collagen levels up however you can!
Too Much Mini
An issue many women run into as they get older is deciding how short is too short. Now, we wouldn't be caught dead telling a woman not to wear something that makes her happy no matter how old she is. So, if wearing mini skirts and mini dresses makes you happy, then, by all means, keep wearing them.
Maybe you want to show off your legs or wear a top that reveals more around your neckline, but a good rule is to steer far away from any item that's too short for comfort. Not only is this style of skirts and dresses way shorter than they need to be, but they're also not as cute.
Not Being Mindful of Your Colors
Not every color under the sun is going to look good on you, and that's fine. The natural colors of your skin, hair, and eyes will determine what colors make you shine the brightest. A good investment anyone can make for themselves is to find out what colors suit their skin tone.
If you have warm undertones, you should wear warmer colors; if you have cool undertones, cool colors work better for you. Once you find your colors, all you have to do is purchase a few staple pieces in those colors that suit you and mix them in with your current wardrobe.
A Jacket Around Your Waist
Jackets are meant to be worn on your body, not tied around your waist, so while it might be a trend nowadays, it's really difficult to pull off. The only exceptions are plaid button-down shirts tied around your jeans and we aren't even sure those shirts are considered jackets anyway.
Even though most of us still feel like children at heart, doing this will only make you appear out of touch. If you're trying to look younger, it's best to take care and avoid this casual trend that will not only make your hips look wider but will also make your outfit look messier.
Wearing Flats All the Time
We'd never thought we'd recommend heels, but in this case, we might make a little exception. While we would never advocate for ankle-crushing stilettos, a little wedge can go a long way when it comes to looking a little younger. So why not choose kitten heels that will give you a little lift while still being comfortable?
Once you're used to wearing small heels, it's easier to go higher. Again, we aren't saying stilettos are the way to go but, chunky heels or rubber heels can definitely create a similar look without compromising your comfort. Before you know it, your legs will be lengthened, and you’ll look years younger.
Double Denim
The "Canadian Tuxedo" or double denim look is a tough look to pull off, and we're not sure anyone ever has. So far, the only example of this fashion choice looking stylish is Britney and Justin Timberlake at the 2001 American Music Awards, as pictured below.
For anyone else at any different time, it often makes people look like they are old-style cowboys or worse. There are plenty of ways to wear denim to make you look younger (or, at least, not older), but the trick here is to not overdo it. A double denim look is, unfortunately, the definition of overdoing it.
Too Much Self-Tanner
We're not sure of the science behind it, but for some reason, when people go too hard on the self-tanner, they age by at least a decade. Do not be fooled into thinking that self-tanner automatically = bronzed goddess with all blemishes and imperfections covered up.
Alas, no. Self-tanner needs to be applied moderately to achieve that, or else you end up looking unnatural. Depending on the tanner and the amount you used, the end look can resemble an Oompa-Loompa, a flaming hot Cheeto, and a certain former president. None of the above has ever been a fashion icon, and it doesn't look like they are going to be either.
Pajama Clothes
We're all for comfort and practicality over trying to impress other people, but this kind of look takes things a bit too far. A number of celebs have tried to rock this look on the red carpet, but it always looks like they are ready to hit the hay... in a nursing home.
Yes, Kris Jenner too. And it doesn't matter that her sleepwear probably costs more than your house, it's not doing her any favors. What's more, no amount of hair and makeup can save the day. In fact, the more effort that you put into your hair and makeup, the more incongruent it looks with the outfit. It's a lose-lose.
Block Eyebrows
Cast your mind back to 2014, when every beauty influencer on YouTube was sporting thick, black eyebrows. At the time, we didn't even think twice — we loved them. We were led to believe that they framed our faces well, considered them the epitome of beauty, and spent hours trying to recreate them ourselves.
It was a dark time. Don't ask, we destroyed all of the pictures. In reality, these brows weren't flattering on most people, they made teenagers look like they were in their 30s, and 30-year-olds didn't even try them because they had the sense to see that this fad was terrible.
Animal Print
Animal print is a controversial look for many reasons, but one of the chiefest among them is that there is something about it that has people over 60 years old in a chokehold. The print itself isn't all that aging; it's just that it's so prevalent among older people that a young person immediately looks older when they wear it.
Not to mention, it's a bold look no matter how you wear it, so it's likely that any added accessories will only add to the cacophony. So, unless you're Carole Baskin or looking to look like Carole Baskin (which we assume would be a hard no), opt out of these prints whenever you can.
Wearing Gray
This one won't age you just because people only typically get gray hair in their later years — it will age you because the ashy color will make you look ashen and pale as well. Obviously, lots of people wear gray and look good — the trick is to wear a darker shade of gray.
The lighter the hue, the ashier it will look, and it can end up making you look pale and sickly. As you grow older, the only light gray you want to have on you is your fabulous hair. In fact, dyeing one's hair gray is a fad many youngsters are toying with today!
Pigtails as an Adult
We don't know who needs to hear this, but please do not wear pigtails if you are over the age of, let's say... nine. Maybe if you want to dress up as a cheerleader or as a child for Halloween, then we can let this one slide, but that's pretty much it.
The reason this hairstyle ages you is because it is literally a child's hairstyle, so any adult wearing them looks like they are trying to look like a child. This only emphasizes how much you are, in fact, not a child, but a fully grown adult who hasn't received the memo on being all grown up.
Animal Hats With Paws
They may keep you warm. They may feel nice. They may remind you of that trip to the zoo when you were a kid and didn't have any rent to pay. However, those animal hats that had the long paws drooping down the sides are one of the many early 2010 trends that need to remain dead and buried.
They might have looked cute when you were 14 (they didn't), but anyone who wears them today looks like they are trying too hard to be quirky. It's a throwback to over a decade ago, and it just shows your inability to let go of your 14 years old-self concept of cool.
Alligator/Crocodile Belts
The etiquette for wearing alligator or crocodile belts is as follows: They must be huge; they must simply droop along the waist — don't even worry about them cinching anything in — and they must not, under any circumstances, match the rest of your outfit.
Given that they are generally unflattering, these belts aren't going to make you look any younger. Hey, it's not like this belt really added anything to Kim Kardashian's look in this picture, so we doubt it will do us any favors. If you're really set on wearing them, give some thought to balancing the outfit with more muted pieces.
Low-Rise Jeans
Low-rise jeans were all the rage in the 90s and early 2000s, and that's ideally where they should stay. They aren't very flattering on most body types, and they also make you look like you're cosplaying as Paris Hilton from 2002. And we all know that Paris has had much (much) better days since then.
It's just an old trend that will only make you look older — not to mention that many tops are cropped nowadays, so an extra-short top paired with extra-low jeans will create an illusion of an abnormally long torso and leave a lot on display.
Acid-Washed Denim
Acid-washed denim makes a comeback every decade or so, so it's understandable that people try to make it work. Or just keep them in their closets for the next time they are in fashion again. It's not a bad look in and of itself; it's just pretty outdated and has been brought out of retirement one too many times.
Really, the only time wearing acid-washed denim works nowadays is for an 80s-themed throwback party. Aside from that, they make you look like you're clinging onto trends of yesteryear. Our advice is to keep one pair, and one pair only, and put it in the costume box until the next comeback.
Shaved Eyebrows
We have no idea why this is a thing. Big names like Doja Cat and Kendall Jenner have exhibited this look, and the result is that they look double their ages. If that's going to be the case for Kendall Jenner, one of the world's highest-paid supermodels, we aren't holding out much hope for regular folk.
Eyebrow trends come and go, and this one is a pretty extreme investment for not a lot of payoff. The only people we can think of that would benefit from having shaved eyebrows are full-time drag queens. Except Doja Cat and Kendall Jenner are not drag queens so we're still stumped.
Too Much Filler
The irony of this one is that people usually get filler to look plumper and younger. In reality, it's a very thin and shaky line between filler achieving a youthful look, and having the reverse effect and aging you. The reason for this is that filler, when overdone, distorts your features too much and makes you look unnatural.
Given that youthful beauty is centered around proportions and symmetry, overdoing it on the filler defeats this purpose. The cheeks look unnaturally elevated, the lips look disproportionate to the face, and the forehead, while smooth, looks expressionless. The overall effect ends up looking like a wax doll.
Photoshop and Filters
Virtually altering your appearance is very tempting for many people, but be warned — it's not all it's cracked up to be. Unless you're experienced in Photoshop, using these tools can often have an adverse effect and make you look that much older and unnaturally proportioned — kind of like what happens when you use too much filler in real life.
Airbrush filters can make you look like you're trying to hide your natural features, which just makes people think your photos are fake. So even if your pictures look younger, your real face will look even older in comparison.
Kimonos as Outerwear
Kimonos and robes can make you look relaxed, fancy, and rich when worn correctly. However, they often end up looking like pajamas. Kimonos need to be paired with a figure-hugging outfit underneath to balance out the flowy-ness of the garment.
If your whole outfit is too loose-fitting, throwing a kimono on top will just make you look like you're in the middle of a stroll in your nursing home. That being said, if you ARE about to take a stroll in your nursing home, a kimono will be just the right thing to do it in. Get yourself a whole collection!
Platform Sandals
Platform sandals have been making a comeback recently — and, on paper, they sound like a good idea. They're comfy, give you some added height, and, depending on who you ask, are quite stylish. The problem is, they have a certain juvenile look about them, which can make the wearer look older.
They were also big in the early 2000s, and, like with any past trend, it's tough to try out something retro without looking twice your age for it. If you are looking to add yourself a few centimeters, we would recommend high heels, heel wedges, or wearing a pair of form-fitting pants.
Hipster Fashion
Hipster fashion is characterized by baggy clothes, mismatched patterns, and the overall appearance of not trying too hard. (Though it is quite possible you spent the better part of two hours putting the look together.) Now, don't get us wrong, this works for some people, however, not everyone can pull it off, and the result is often that it makes the wearer look like a mess.
That, mixed with the hipster affinity for vintage, results in a grandma aesthetic that just does not work. If you want to make your wardrobe less mainstream, maybe start by incorporating just one hipster element rather than going full-force.
Chunky Knit Sweaters
Chunky knit sweaters fall into the category of "cozy bordering on homeless." Which sucks because they're great! Who doesn't love a chunky knit sweater? The thing is, there has been an uptick in vintage-style chunky knits with people thinking they look cute and quirky.
And while this may be true, they also make you look older by virtue of the fact that they are designed to replicate the clothes that old people wear. There are plenty of nice and stylish sweaters and coats you can opt for if you're starting to feel the cold and looking for something comforting to wrap yourself in.
Color-Tinted Glasses
Okay, this one is a little tricky, because some designs, depending on the frame and the shape of your face, can actually work. Color-tinted glasses are tough because you think you look like Robert Downey Jr., but you actually usually look like Elton John.
And that's no shade (no pun intended) to Elton John, but RDJ has looked cool and suave for decades, and Elton John... hasn't. These glasses are very flower-power chic, but they are primarily worn by older men, so it's tough to break that association and pull them off as a fashion statement in their own right.
Fanny Packs
Easy, practical, and comfortable, fanny packs are a great way to keep your possessions safe and close by. Not to mention, they literally take the load off your back if you actually wear one of these instead of a backpack or a shoulder bag. Here's the issue, though: they are guaranteed to make you look like a dad at the airport.
There's just no way around this fact. Sure, you can try wearing it cross-body for a younger, more hip look, but you can't escape looking like a dad who also wears cargo shorts and his socks pulled all the way up.
