Waitomo
This tiny town is charming, but the real draw is the underground. Descend beneath the earth and find limestone caves that were formed by the ocean some 30 million years ago. These magical formations are home to glow-worms which light up the roofs like shining stars. It’ll be like staring out into the night sky, except you’ll be in a cave, filled with glow-worms. Now that’s an adventure.
Rotorua
Don’t let the sulfurous stench put you off. That stuff aside, it’s one of the most fascinating places in the world. The natural geysers, mud pools, and breathtaking lakes will certainly distract you from the smell. It is called Sulphur City after all. You can also end the day at their famous wineries. Of course, once you’re away from all that geothermal activity, the smells will no longer be an issue.
Coromandel
White sandy beaches and forest-like coastal lines, Coromandel is simply heavenly. It’s no surprise that films like The Chronicles of Narnia have used the region’s breathtaking scenery for the setting. This is the best of New Zealand’s wildlife and the answer to your city stress.
Hamilton
Get a glimpse of the great Waikato River that snakes through the center. The beautiful city of Hamilton is a hub for food and drink and is not to be overlooked. The most striking attraction is the Hamilton Gardens, where an endless amount of plants and flowers thrive in the themed garden designs. Spend a day ambling through the beautiful pathways and eating at incredible restaurants.
